The difference between a nuclear-powered submarine and a conventional submarine is the performance advantages of nuclear power compared to conventional submarines (usually diesel, electric, etc.). Nuclear power, being completely independent of the atmosphere, eliminates the need for the submarine to frequently surface, as is often required in conventional submarines. The large amount of power generated by a nuclear reactor allows nuclear submarines to operate at high speeds for long periods of time.
